Decorating homes in Ashington
Ashington grew rapidly as a coal mining town, and that history is still visible in its long, orderly rows of brick terraces, particularly in the Hirst area with its famous numbered and named streets. Around these older streets are interwar and post-war council homes, private semis and a good number of newer estates built since the pits closed. The town has changed a great deal in recent years, but terraced houses still make up a large part of the housing, and many are being updated by new owners and landlords who want a clean, modern finish.
Colliery terraces are compact, with small rooms, narrow stairs and back yards. Inside, it is common to find old wallpaper painted over several times, patched plaster and woodwork with many coats of gloss. Before a fresh colour goes on, these surfaces need to be stripped or sanded, filled and primed, otherwise defects show straight through. Our wallpaper removal and preparation work is often the first stage of a full redecoration here.
Ashington is close to the coast at Newbiggin and Cresswell, and the flat, open land around the town means wind and rain can be persistent. Brick, render, timber windows and doors all wear faster than they would in a sheltered spot, so exterior paintwork benefits from good preparation and quality masonry and timber paints. With so many rented terraces in the town, we also offer landlord and rental decorating, using hard-wearing neutral finishes that are easy to maintain and touch up between lets.
