Planning a whole room, not just a wall
The difference between a room that looks decorated and one that looks patched together is usually planning. Before we quote, we look at how paper and paint will meet, which walls suit wallpaper, how the ceiling and woodwork will tie in, and whether anything needs repair first.
A common approach is wallpaper on a chimney breast or behind a bed, with the remaining walls painted in a colour picked from the paper. Others prefer papering every wall and painting only the ceiling and woodwork. We can help you weigh up options, and our interior decorating page covers colour and finish planning in more depth.
The right order of work
Decorating in the correct sequence stops fresh work getting damaged and makes the edges crisp. On a typical full room we work like this:
- Protect floors and furniture, and remove fittings where agreed
- Strip old paper and assess the plaster underneath
- Fill, sand and seal walls, and hang lining paper if needed
- Paint the ceiling first, so drips never land on finished walls
- Prepare and paint woodwork
- Paint the walls that are not being papered
- Hang wallpaper last, so it stays clean and the edges meet painted surfaces cleanly
Some papers and situations call for a slightly different order, and we will explain if that applies to your room.
Wallpaper and paint working together
Wallpaper needs a smooth, sound, evenly absorbent surface. If old paper comes off and takes plaster with it, or walls are uneven, lining paper can give a much better base. We will tell you honestly when a wall needs more than filling, as described on our wallpaper removal page.
We hang a wide range of papers, including paste-the-wall, traditional paste-the-paper, vinyls and heavier textured papers. Patterns are matched carefully across joins and set out so the design sits well on the most visible wall. For paper-only jobs, see our wallpaper hanging service.
On the paint side, we suggest finishes that suit how the room is used: wipeable matt or eggshell for busy hallways and kitchens, softer matt for bedrooms and living rooms, and durable finishes on woodwork.
What to expect during the job
Before we begin, we confirm which walls are being papered, the paint colours and finishes, and how long the room will be out of use. We ask you to have the paper delivered before we start and check that all rolls share the same batch number, as shades can vary slightly between batches.
During the work, we keep the room covered and organised, clear up at the end of each day, and let you know if we find anything unexpected behind old paper. When we finish, we go round the room with you to make sure you are happy, and we leave any spare paper and labelled paint so future touch-ups are easy.
Local decorating with clear communication
Working from Westerhope, we decorate homes across Newcastle and nearby towns, from older properties where walls are rarely perfectly straight to newer homes with fresh plaster. Older walls often need a little more preparation and careful setting out so patterns look straight even when corners are not, and we allow for that in the plan rather than discovering it halfway through.
