Decorating homes in Sunderland
Sunderland has a housing character all of its own. Alongside the usual Victorian terraces and inter-war semis, the city is known for its single-storey terraced cottages, built in large numbers for working families in the nineteenth century and still lived in across areas such as Millfield and Pallion. Their low ceilings, deep window reveals and compact rooms are lovely to decorate, but they reward patience: old plaster often needs careful filling, and decades of paint on door frames may need stripping back before a clean finish is possible.
At the other end of the scale, Ashbrooke has a conservation area full of large Victorian villas with tall ceilings, cornicing, picture rails and panelled doors. Here the work is about respecting period detail, cutting in neatly around mouldings and choosing paints that suit older surfaces. Our interior decorating service covers this sort of detailed work.
Along the coast at Roker and Seaburn, salt air and wind off the North Sea are hard on exterior paintwork. Window frames, railings and rendered walls can look tired surprisingly quickly, so good preparation and a proper exterior painting system matter more than usual. Exterior work is best planned for settled weather in late spring and summer, when walls are dry.
Sunderland also has a large rental market, much of it serving students at the University of Sunderland and its City and St Peter's campuses. Landlords often need quick, hard-wearing refreshes between tenancies, and we can plan around move-out and move-in dates.
