Decorating homes in Hamsterley
Hamsterley sits above the Derwent valley in County Durham, close to the border with Gateshead, with Hamsterley Mill a little further down the slope towards the river. It should not be confused with the village of the same name near Hamsterley Forest in Weardale. Around here the landscape is woodland, farmland and steep lanes, with the Derwent Walk and the Gibside estate a short distance away. Housing is a mix of traditional stone cottages, older detached houses and later twentieth century homes.
Traditional stone buildings in the valley usually have solid walls that rely on being able to dry out. Heavy plastic-based paints on these walls can trap moisture, leading to flaking, bubbling and damp patches inside. We look at what coatings are already present and, where it suits the building, recommend breathable finishes. Our masonry painting service covers stone, render and brick, with suitable preparation for each.
Tree cover and the valley setting bring their own issues. Shaded walls stay damp for longer, and green algae can build up on render and timber. Leaves and debris also collect on sills. Cleaning surfaces properly and allowing them to dry before painting is essential, and north-facing elevations may need more frequent maintenance than sunny ones. We plan exterior jobs for settled, drier weather.
Inside, older cottages often have deep window reveals, uneven walls, low ceilings and timber that has been painted many times over. Neat cutting in and sensible choice of sheen make a big difference. Our interior decorating work can cover whole rooms, including walls, ceilings, woodwork and wallpaper, planned to suit the character of the house.
